“Despondent vocals met with a pulsing bass-line, not tonally dissimilar to that of Peter Hook. The central questioning of loss, of ‘how we got to this’ becomes tied in with a sonic soundscape of reverb heavy ambient guitar, and with this, the track develops a paired back, yet emotive sense of taking heavy steps towards an upward struggle. At one point the vocals soar to a beautifully piercing head note, and at this moment the track is lifted by a progression of trip hop-esque drum beats (think Massive Attack / Portishead) and breathing strings that allow the song to put one foot in front of the other - no longer is the voice isolated, so much as taking their own steps to put the feelings of isolation in a form of retrospect. The song ends not with closure, but a sense of distance. The strength here lies in the moments of minimalism, each piece of instrumentation is given its space to drift alongside the beautifully delivered vocals - and flutter, as emotion bubbles at the surface of this ruminating space.”
